Umami Martini
Umami is a loanword from the Japanese and it can be translated as ‘pleasant savory taste’.
Umami or savory taste is one of the five basic tastes (together with sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness).
It is said that people taste umami through taste receptors that typically respond to glutamate.
Umami has its own receptors rather than arising out of a combination of the traditionally recognized taste receptors and some scientists now consider umami to be a distinct taste.
Tomato’s are rich in umami components and I have used tomato 🍅 water to create a new Martini experience.
I used:
60ml @thebotanistgin Gin
15ml @cinzano.official Blanco vermouth
30ml Tomato Water
Barspoon olive brine.
Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake until combined. .
Pour into a chilled cocktail glass and serve with your desired amount of olives and a tomato vine.
What I just love about this Martini is that the subtle tomato flavour is not the first thing that you taste, it comes through later.
It is a real taste sensation and it’s exciting to bring flavours to cocktails that are not just sweet or sour!
Have you ever tried a umami cocktail?
Salud!
